David Dow was a successful trader with a small coasting
vessel - probably a Lugger - servicing the Aberdeenshire villages from Collieston to
Rathen, whence he originated. David married Ann Walker from Collieston and
the pair settled in Cruden Bay, or Port Erroll as it was known They
recognised the opportunities offered by the railways, which reached Aberdeen
in the 1850's, enabling Aberdeenshire to serve the London market. ( I'm
making this up. I wasn't there at the time) With the encouragement of the
Earl of Erroll they set about netting salmon in the bay and sending barrels
of pickled salmon to London. They leased the Salmon Fishings from the Earl,
presumably on a nineteen year lease. A sheer guess suggests that the first
lease started in 1864 and terminated in 1883.
