Alexander was a cot death in the days before the term was
used. He was certified by the local doctor as having died "through being
overlain by the mother." It must have been a shattering experience for his
mother, Ann. The 1860's were still strongly Calvinistic in Cruden, and
Alexander was born five months after his parents' marriage.
The present writer is confident that not one of his parent's generation
was ever aware of Alexander's birth and death.
